Trending Topic: #UnemploymentCRISIS

Date: 13/05/2017

No. of Tweets: 17,000

Initiated By: Congress & Supporters

Trigger for Trending Topic:

  • (i) News of 7 IT companies firing 56000 people, due to automation, loss of business, Trump administration new rules, loss of cost competitiveness etc.
  • (ii) A UN report that unemployment in India is likely to increase in 2017-18; rate to remain at 3.4%:

Congress Attack: Party led the attack posting a number of tweets from its handle questioning failure of Modi govt. in creating jobs.

RaGa too joined the bandwagon charging NaMo govt. is not capable of creating jobs.

1

NSUI tweeted:

2

Bhushan Patil (General Secretary, Mumbai Congress) tweeted to the finance minister asking him to respond to the crisis in the IT sector.

BJP Counter Attack: BJP response was timid. It used its army handles to counter the charge. It claimed lowest unemployment rate is in states run by the party while the highest rate in states run by Congress/opposition.

3

Winner of This Twitter War: Congress, it managed to trend this topic. BJP IT Cell caught napping couldn’t effectively counter.

The Crux of Matter: Job creation has been one of the biggest challenges of Modi govt. Despite ‘Make in India’ and 7%+ GDP growth, job growth has been low.

BJP claims official data doesn’t capture the unorganized sector jobs and also the self-employment opportunities created, and hence unemployment data released by Labour Ministry doesn’t depict the true picture.

News of unemployment rate at 5 years high is purely sensational when Modi took over it was 4.9% under MMS, which has increased to 5% under NDA rule.

Am not belittling the issue, it is a very big challenge for Modi and could be his humbug in 2019 if not tackled properly.
