In a bold move to bolster their position in the next year assembly polls, the ruling party Samajwadi Party has brought Quami Ekta Dal led by controversial Ansari brothers under its fold.
Quami Ekta Dal was founded by Mukhtar Ansari in 2010. Mr Ansari is a history sheeter on a trial for murder and has been accused of extortion and abduction currently toiling in jail. QED contested 2012 elections on 43 seats and won 2 seats registering 0.55% vote share.
The party has influence in Eastern UP among the minority community which represents 19% of population. The move is aimed at consolidating the Muslim vote. In 2012 Muslim parties like QED, Peace Party, Ittehad-e-Milat Council and Rashtriya Ulama Council bagged 15% of community votes.
At a time when law and order issue is expected to be the lead issue in next year polls where SP govt. track record has been poor, this move could further alienate some voters. Afraid of this Akhilesh is reported to have opposed the move.
The deal was finalized by Mulaym’s brother Shivpal with Akhilesh in the dark. This once again brings to the fore the “panch CM” issue in UP. Is Akhilesh in full control or his father and his brothers? Will the merger be revoked like the suspension of some youth leaders earlier in the year? Who will win the tug of war? Stay tuned….
