PB’s twisty take on the top five headlines of the day.
1. India can no longer live with black money: Jaitley
India can no longer live with black money, but certain former BJP ministers can conduct weddings at a cost of over 500 crores. The only difference is that the Congress offered it for debate in 2012 and the idea was scuttled and Modi proceeded in an autocratic way without any prior dialogue. In hindsight, this is perhaps the way to go.
2. N-deal with Japan should not be victim of desi politics
This kind of sophistry is undesirable and imprudent. Today, the agreement with Japan is caught in an opaque zone of interpretative nuance – about nuclear testing. Stock phrases like sovereign right being trampled are being heard. It has softened its stance as it competes for lucrative deals in the face of China’s expanding economic and military presence.
3. Demonetization is a big-black scheme: Mamata
Demonetisation a big blow to fake currency hubs Malda and Murshidabad. Shouldn’t she be supporting this move?
4. Rahul says 15 people close to Modi controlling country
Demonetization is taking its toll on all. A simple question to be asked? How will depositing one’s money in a bank, rob them of their entitlement on that money?
5. Loans To Mallya’s Kingfisher Write-Off ‘Only In Books’: Jaitley
Now he has reached a stage that he can never get a loan from the Indian Banking system. But SBI has only removed the NPA from the balance sheet- and this is a usual clean up exercise related purely to balance sheets. This does not mean that the “loan is written off” as Mallaya will continue to be liable for the loan as balance sheet is not related to individual Trade Receivables.
