PB’s twisty take on the top five headlines of the day.
1. India-Russia defence deals
Pathbreaking agreement indeed. In the past too the agreemn t between the two countries stood firm – may it be in the defence deals or in any other fields. It is good to bolster India’s defence by buying arms, and strengthen the relations with Russia, but at that same time, other areas need to be flourishing as well.
2. Jayalalithaa’s illness: Woes of a one-person party
It is seen that people of Tamil Nadu have no choice but to elect one of DMK or AIADMK. All other fringe parties are no better. We need some sort of reboot in the state where the entire political brass disappears and we start afresh.
3. Sensex down 5% from Mt 29K; 120 stocks scale all-time highs
Midcap and smallcap stocks have been in action since the start of October. Stock-specific action is likely to continue but the benchmark indices could remain under pressure for the rest of 2016.
4. Kashmir issue ‘main cause of unrest’ in region: Nawaz Sharif
Pakistan began it in 1947 in a bid to take Jammu and Kashmir by force when the state wanted to remain independent in reliance on the provisions in the Indian Independence Act,1947. Along with that, Pakistan has now adopted a new line that of denying any attack from its soil on Indian positions in Kashmir. And conveniently forgets the unrest in Baloch, Vajiristan, Karachistan etc.
5. PM Modi Meets Chinese President Xi Jinping, May Raise Terror From Pak
Unfortunately no road can go to Afghanistan or Central Asia via other countries less Pakistan or China. Even the air traffic to Central Asia, Russia, Iran, Europe and USA pass through Pakistan. Investing in Afghanistan is not prudent for India. India needs to focus on other options.
