PB’s twisty take on the top five headlines of the day.
1. Former Arunachal CM Kalikho Pul kills self
May his soul rest in peace. In the absence of a suicide note, it cannot be concluded it was suicide. There should be an CBI investigation into it in order to get the truth. Politics is a messy game in India.
2. Irom Sharmila ends 16-year-long hunger fast
Earlier, talking to the media at JNIMS, Sharmila appealed to people not to misconstrue her decision about joining politics insisting that else the much-longed-for change could never be achieved. At last, it is better she should contest and win the elections. Later she should help centre to tackle terrorism there and remove AFSA.
3. The Azaadi India Has Kashmir Can Feel Too: PM’s Big Outreach
It is the season of him breaking his long-held silences. The PM’s words came after a month of the Valley erupting in large-scale protests and violence in the wake of the death of Burhan Wani. That it took the PM over a month to break his silence is indicative of how Kashmir, for New Delhi, has been always more about the territory and less about its people and their grievances.
4. India Summons Pakistan Envoy Over ‘Continuing Cross-Border Terrorism’
There will be a tit for tat and these diplomatic moves will not move even an inch away from their continued support to disturbing peace in India. Only a cost that is perceived as greater than their benefits will have an impact. We are not causing a cost effect.
5. India should avoid ‘entanglement’ in South China Sea: Chinese media
India should give the devil its due. SCS is a UN issue and we must insist that we respect UN terms. Other than that we a better off not making any provocative statements. USA and the West have a bad history of placing the muzzle on Indian shoulders to shoot at the Chinese. We will end up losing hand over fist.
